Driver Fatigue

truck-driver-fatigueDriver fatigue is one of the most common causes of commercial trucking accidents. For this reason, there are federal regulations in place that prohibit truck drivers from driving for too long of a time period. Some of the key regulations include:

  • Truck drivers cannot drive more than 10 consecutive hours a day.
  • Truck drivers cannot drive more than 11 total hours a day.
  • Truck drivers cannot drive more than 60 hours in a week.
  • Truck drivers cannot drive 70 hours in 8 consecutive days.

Despite these specific laws which were created in an effort to prevent trucking accidents, many truck drivers choose to push their mental and physical limits by driving great distances with little or no sleep.  Often times, they are under a great amount of pressure to deliver a package by a certain time or day. So, they choose to disregard federal regulations and attempt to drive through the exhaustion. This type of negligent act can lead to very serious accidents because trucks are much larger and heavier than passenger vehicles or motorcycles.

It is important to contact a personal injury attorney if you, or a loved one, have been injured in an accident resulting from truck driver fatigue. An attorney will examine the truck driver’s logs, investigate any prior citations the truck driver may have, and evaluate the trucking company.

No one’s life should ever be put at risk because of a deadline. Hiring the right attorney can help you overcome the tragic event of an accident involving driver fatigue by providing the legal representation you deserve to move on with life.
